On September 20th, 1970, hundreds of well-wishers gathered in a field in Springs to witness Malcolm Brighton, Rodney Anderson and Pamela Brown in their attempt to be the first balloonists to cross the Atlantic Ocean. It was not to be. Some thirty-two hours later the giant balloon went down in a storm off the coast of Newfoundland. The Free Life and its youthful crew were never found. This project was inspired by that historical event.

DAN KOONTZ

Dan Koontz is an East Hampton-based songwriter and performer. In addition to his songs for The Free Life, Dan has recorded original country-tinged songs with his family band Edan’s Kin and R & B-style songs with the Hoodoo Loungers. He sings and plays with both of these bands and several others on the East End. A producer as well as a songwriter and performer, Dan is currently finishing up the recording of The Free Life with the help of Mick Hargreaves at Lantern Sound, and plans to release the record in the fall.
