KARYN MANNIX

Karyn Mannix, a longtime resident of East Hampton, has been in many aspects of the creative world. First, as a fashion and costume designer, studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology. By the age of twenty-one, her clothing line had been in feature films, Vogue Magazine, the cover of WWD, Cyndi Lauper’s HBO Tour, Michael Mann’s “Crime Stories” TV Series, carried by stylist Patricia Field, and was displayed alongside Donna Karan at Bloomingdales, NYC.

She held various positions as a fashion illustrator for WWD and French Connection; window installation for Bergdorf Goodman, Diane Von Furstenberg & Barneys NY; and set and prop design for numerous theater troupes.

She earned a second degree in Post Modern Art Theory & Criticism which led to stints as curator, critic, columnist, gallerist, and educator, and eventually opened an art school, which is now closed.

Previously owning four brick-and-mortar galleries, Karyn has simplified and settled into a career as a private art dealer, representing artists from around the globe. Through all of this, Karyn has never stopped creating her art and has added playing the electric bass with an all-female band. She is adding THE MANNIX SHOW to her adventures because…why not?

CHRISTINA STRASSFIELD

Executive Director of Southampton Arts Center

Christina Mossaides Strassfield is the executive director of the Southampton Arts Center in Southampton, New York. Appointed as executive director in November 2022, she leads all aspects of the organization including artistic vision and programming, leading development and fundraising initiatives, and cultivating and maintaining the many partnerships and relationships with museum investors and partners, among other management functions.

Prior to her work with the Southampton Arts Center, Strassfield was museum director and chief curator of the Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton, New York, a role she began in 2009. She had been the curator at Guild Hall Museum from 1990 to 1996 and returned in 2002. One of Strassfield’s standout achievements while overseeing the artistic leadership and overall management of Guild Hall Museum was the exemplary exhibition schedule: During her tenure, she transformed the museum into a vital center for the visual arts in New York, recognized by standout reviews in The New York Times, Art in America, ArtNews, and New York Magazine.

Strassfield’s work with the Southampton Arts Center and the Guild Hall Museum allowed her to forge close relationships with important artists, dealers, and collectors from the New York art world.

Strassfield led the development of major exhibitions with internationally recognized artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Chuck Close, Eric Fischl, David Salle, April Gornik, Cindy Sherman, Dan Flavin, Taryn Simon, Barbara Kruger, and Richard Prince.

KATHRYN MARKEL

Owner of Kathryn Markel Fine Arts

Kathryn began her eponymous gallery in 1976 with the belief that contemporary art can be beautiful as well as visually and intellectually rigorous and that acquiring it should be a source of pleasure and self-discovery. For more than 45 years, Kathryn has helped collectors find the art that speaks to them, and, therefore, exhibits a diverse group of artists united by hard-won craft, compelling intellectual framework, and a love of the art-making process.

Prior to opening her gallery, she worked for 3 years as the primary traveling salesperson for Landfall Press, a lithographic workshop in Chicago. She attended Northwestern University and graduated with a BA in Art History from the University of Illinois. She is also a member of ArtTable and is the former Board Chairman of GlassRoots, a non-profit hot glass studio in Newark that teaches glassmaking to at-risk youth.

NED SMYTH

Known for his large-scale public artworks

Ned has been showing his work since 1974. He has had international exhibitions in both museums and galleries, including MOMA, The Hirshorn Museum, The Venice Biennale, PS1, The Holly Solomon Gallery, Rudolph Zwirner Gallery in Cologne, and Gallery Bischofberger in Zurich.

Smyth's early work was in the minimal tradition, except that he included architectural references and created architectural spaces. Before the development of the Post-Modern Architectural style, Smyth was quoting or alluding to historical architectural periods, details., and reverent spaces. His environmental gallery exhibitions quickly led him to be commissioned to create public spaces for cities and corporations.

Starting in 2004, Ned began using his collection of found glacial till stones, as sources for monumental photographs, and bronzes. At the moment, he is showing bronzes and large-scale photos, that derive from his collection of found pieces of stones and wood. He stresses that the art of this work comes from the seeing and finding of the objects of Matter and Life. Whereas his early works were monuments to
Culture, his new works are monuments to Nature.

STEVE MILLER

Known for his paintings, which combine aspects of art, science, and technology

Steve Miller has been working with art, science and technology since 1980. He has collaborated with the 2003 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Rod MacKinnon, in a project about human protein, worked at Brookhaven National Labs and at CERN in Geneva where he lectured to the Theory Group.

For a decade, Miller developed a photographic project about the Amazon. Miller proposed to give Brazil, our planetary lungs, a medical check-up by taking x-rays of the flora and fauna. The project entitled Heath of the Planet has been published as three monographs, Radiographic, Surf/Skate and Surfing the Cosmos published by G Editions. Surfing the Cosmos is about high energy physics at CERN and the favela in Rio with a forward by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

His work has been presented as solo exhibitions in Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, Hong Kong, Rio, London, Boston, New York City and, most recently, at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC. Miller designs one of a kind custom surfboards and skate decks. He designs Mongolian cashmere in association with James Paul Cheung.
